Y'know, sometimes a walk can just be a walk. [ He shrugs. Obviously there are other benefits to be had, and he knows her witchy activities in particular benefit from the kinds of things you might find, but - ] Just to...I dunno, move your legs, get some fresh air. Like I said: a change of scenery can do a lot.
[ Clear the mind, reset the body...
Damn. Why doesn't he do this more, again? ]
Or, uh - it's just a good place for a conversation. [ Ahem. With a beautiful woman. ] Like...what kinds of ingredients can you find around here? Anything?
[ They're not in the most remote spot, after all. The woods are really just a modest stretch of trees in suburbia. But you can definitely still find spell ingredients in odd places, and that includes mundane places, too. ]
( offered only because she knows that sam would find it interesting, and that some of these things he needs or uses also. she'd been very impressed by how well stocked the bunker was when she'd first had to do a spell there
so she leads their walk towards a grassy area, closer to a park than the wooded area but as he knew, ingredients can be found in the most mundane of places )
I like the lavendar that's close to the stream. It grows well, considering how little of it there is. But even the leaves from some of the trees can do wonders, depending on use. ( she shrugs gently ) There's also a hawthorn that I've picked from.
[ The offer earns her an easy smile, the light in his eyes that brightens at the opportunity for learning flaring up in response. ]
Yeah, I'd love that. [ Spoken genuinely, of course. The chance to hear more about this stuff from her: a talented witch who also happens to be a beautiful woman?
Christ. He sounds like Dean. Well, whatever. He's only human. ]
What other trees d'you usually work with, besides hawthorn? [ Sam himself knows a lot of trees that are significant to different groups: Christian, pagan, the list goes on. Right now, he's focused solely on her craft and its peculiarities. ] And - what's the lavender for?
( rowena tucks her hand onto his elbow to guide him closer, and to keep herself steadier as the ground changes from flat path to the grassy terrain )
Rowan trees, sometimes elder. Each has its purpose depending on whether it's a spell or a potion that I'd like to make.
( which she knows is vague but it's also something they could talk about more easily with books around them or the plants themselves )
I use lavender mostly for two reasons -- protection and sleep. I have a tea blend that I've created, which I work a spell into to ease some of my nightmares.
( her words turn a little quieter, because rowena does not talk about her nightmares, even with samuel-- even with the person who knows them and understands them. but also, even for all of her power, she doubts the tea or spell does much, but it's something she continues in the belief that it helps somewhat )
"Rowan" for Rowena. [ Sam chuckles, laying a hand over her own as they move. ] I know they're situational, just figured I'd ask what you're most commonly getting use out of.
[ He and Dean work with some of the same materials, when needed, but nowhere near as often as she does, and not to that extent. ]
Funny enough: you've got that in common with a lot of people. I don't think you could step into an organic grocery store and not bump into something lavender-scented that claims it'll help with relaxation.
[ And it does, when used correctly. He just assumes a lot of those products are either using the minimal amount, or no real herb at all. ]
Protection though, huh? [ He'll avoid magnifying mention of her nightmares, though his tone does turn soft. ] What does it help with there?
( she squeezes sam's arm gently, grateful for the continuation of the magical topic rather than her nightmares, giving him a small smile in response to his softer tone )
Traditionally, it was used for warding off evil spirits. Some hung lavender by their doors, others used it in cleansing.
( the cleansing aspect is something that rowena has and still does, using incense to lift the energy in the room )
With my tea blend it's a protection for my mind. ( neither want to talk about her nightmares but this use of magic keeps touching it ) To banish what may harm my sleep.
Glad we've got so much that helps with that. [ He chuckles, talking about the number of herbs that help ward. ] Though I think the evil spirits have still gotten a little too comfortable around here.
[ A joke. He stuffs a hand into his jeans pockets as they walk, rifling though his mental encyclopedia of other, similar plants and when they'd had to make use of over the years, wondering vaguely how much Rowena has worked with them and what insights she'd have to offer.
A lot, he knows. She's just...got an experience of all this that goes so far beyond what he'll ever get to see. Even so, he wants to hear about as much as he can from her while there's time. ]
Like against scrying or control. [ Lots of ways to negatively impact the mind, unfortunately. Which he knows better than most. ] Not just lavender though, right?
( her hand slips from his arm, stepping in front of him as the path narrows, leading him deeper into the trees )
Lavender, sage, rosemary-- they're all typical things that you would find. Sage, especially, has become almost a symbol of a cleansing ritual, though really, it's what you wish to cleanse that should also play some part in it.
( she pauses her step, checking their path before moving again, careful steps in her heels over the rocks and branches )
For you, bay leaves and nettles would serve you well. I could make you a little hex bag to carry.
( hex bags, despite their name, could have positive uses as well as the spells that they were used to seeing )
Sage. Right. [ Spoken with a scoff. It's been appropriated, after all, by a lot of would-be witches. Just another legitimate practice made into a trend by social media. ] Somehow I feel like people just pick it up at their local store and forget there's supposed to be any intention in it.
[ Fortunately, going about that the wrong way doesn't have any deadly consequences...that he's aware of, anyway. ]
For me? [ Sam's brows lift in question as he hunts for the meanings of the two herbs that she might be referencing. ] Oh...thanks. But what for?
[ He might be able to guess, of course, but better to hear it from the witch's mouth. ]
( things that even a skilled hunter could use. skill doesn't mean bad things doesn't happen, and good luck is a beautiful thing to have in your pocket )
Small things can be incredibly powerful, and are often very overlooked in that.
( she means the hex bag but the same is true of the witch saying it. so many had overlooked her power based on how she looked )
Yeah. Could always use more of those. [ God knows... ] Or any, at least where luck's concerned.
[ Though he immediately thinks of the rabbit's foot from years back and pulls a face at the memory of some of the damage the cursed object had wrought...
What she says next softens his face again, his smile turning fond. ]
You can say that again. [ Rowena is what he's thinking of, naturally. She's been such an incredible ally, and -- as she's said -- someone likely to be overlooked by their enemies, or anyone at all. ] I hope 'small things' don't always feel overlooked, though.
( rowena looks up, her expression inquisitive. but then she understands, smiling fondly at him )
Not by the people who mean a lot to them.
( the people that have shown her care certainly make her feel seen, and she appreciates that. especially with how well samuel seems to understand her, being able to see past some of the walls she puts up for everyone else.
she starts to speak again, but having taken her eyes from the path, rowena misses what's right in front of her. her foot slips, and she tries to grasp for him to steady herself again )
