Character Information

Character: Rowena MacLeod
Canon: Supernatural, post 1508 Our Father Who Aren't In Heaven
Age: appears mid/late 30s, actually over 300
History: Link
Possessions: The clothes she's wearing, including the ridiculous amount of hair pins in her hair!
Weapon: Her magic!

Powers/Abilities:
WITCH. Rowena is a witch, having honed her craft for over three centuries and building herself an incredible base of knowledge. Being a natural-born witch (as opposed to one who got their power from a demon deal) means that, as well as being able to cast spells through incantations, Rowena has an innate magic/power within her, being able to draw magic to her and cast spells nonverbally. After practising her craft for centuries, she's incredibly knowledgeable about many forms of magic, skilled in spellwork (and creating spells), using hex bags and Enochian sigils or Druidic runes. Rowena is also able to translate spells from multiple languages, including many ancient languages.

Many of Rowena's spells come from grimoires or things that she has memorised. Spells and hex bags require Rowena to have gathered the ingredients in advance and often prepared them in advance.

Rowena is capable of using her magic to heal herself and others or resurrect them, transform people and objects into other things, astral project, conjure illusions, curse others (and remove curses) and she also has an awareness of other magical (or supernatural) beings, being able to sense them.

Some of the spells that Rowena uses a hex bag for, she is also able to cast without it (the hex bag strengthening the length of time the spell is cast for). Without a hex bag, she can additionally conjure elements, telekinetically move or destroy objects and people, and teleport. Rowena can manipulate the strength of her spells (e.g. light a candle with a small flame or light someone on fire with a larger power) and also use magical energy on its own as an attack or defence.

Additionally, as a witch, Rowena is immortal, immune to ageing and disease, but can be killed in other ways (being stabbed, burned or having her neck snapped). She prefers carrying a resurrection seal on her (just in case), however, she currently does not have one on her person.

WEAKNESSES & NOTES.
★ Though she is a powerful witch, she is physically very squishy and has zero physical strength in a fight. She's able to be bested in a magical fight, as Rowena often panics or can be caught by someone else's spell.
★ Rowena will have to spend time gathering ingredients and will only be able to cast spells that she has memorised (unless she finds a grimoire) or does not need any ingredients to cast initially.
★ Rowena will only be able to teleport short distances around the city.
★ She will not be able to open any portals (or time travel), or summon or banish others.
★ Her power can happily be lowered to any game requirements (for strength, time limit or casting distance).
★ Whilst Rowena is powerful, learning the power of friendship has stopped her from feeling as free as she used to be in wanting to hurt others, only now doing so when her life (or someone she cares about) is at risk.
★ She is terribly afraid of fire and will panic and freeze at a fire not caused by herself.
★ Permissions will be asked from others before magic is used on a character.
★ Rowena will attempt to create her resurrection seal, but it can easily be stated that she can't find an ingredient to prevent her from finishing it. The same is true for other resurrection spells (unless you'd ever like zombies).

Application Questions

Who is the most important person in their life and why? What might be different if this person hadn't been around?
Sam Winchester is Rowena's best friend. When the two first met, there was nothing friendly between them: she was a witch in their way who then tried to kill his brother, but despite that, Sam took a chance on Rowena when he needed her magic and expertise. He had no reason to trust her, but he gave her something that Rowena had never had before in her life: someone who willingly listened to her and sought her out about magic, and someone who gave her a chance. Kindness.

Whilst Rowena was effectively Sam's prisoner throughout this, she never tried to hurt him, even after she was free from her chains. It was respect given (she respected his decision to chain her, deciding he wasn't that stupid, and for the chance he'd given her), and it made her answer his calls in the future. Though the banter between them initially was quite tense, there was an easy flow between them.

Whenever the Winchesters needed Rowena's help, it usually ended up being Sam who worked with her, as he had a better understanding of magic and she was fonder of him than Dean. Working with Sam helped to build trust and friendship between them. This growing bond was essential after Lucifer killed Rowena. Sam was able to see through her walls and saw how afraid she was, despite her trying to disconnect from the conversation, and showed her understanding and kindness in return. Sam's experiences with Lucifer helped him connect with her, making Sam the only person Rowena has willingly been vulnerable with and has opened up to.

Their friendship grew into mentorship: Sam had always listened to her about magic, and slowly she began teaching him, making him her protégé and viewing him as a witch. They'd grown close enough that after she died, Sam was the only person able to enter her flat without being killed: she'd left her possessions and life's knowledge on magic to him. Her protégé. Her best friend.

Sam and Rowena likely would always meet: she interrupted one of their cases, but had Sam not needed her help or if Rowena had rejected the offer, their lives would have separated. Rowena would have continued being self-serving and simply looking out for herself; she likely never would have been killed by Lucifer and would never have unlocked her full power. Everything would have continued as it had for the past few centuries, unchanging.

Because Rowena met Sam and he took a chance on her, her life changed, not always for the better, but she was given new opportunities. Sam showed her the kindness and friendship she'd always been denied, and he helped her realise that the calm and quiet life she'd always wanted was possible. Whilst terrible things did befall her, she had family around her who supported her through it. She was no longer alone; she was cared for, and it helped her to open back up to the world and care about something other than herself. She'd found a family to protect and love, a family she would willingly die for, and she had no regrets there.

Is there an event in your character's life that they'd do differently? How so and why?
Rowena's biggest regret in her life is abandoning her son, Fergus, and leading him to believe that his mother didn't love him.

Their relationship started turbulently from his birth: it was traumatic (for her), and her baby's father abandoned her during the birth. Rowena's relationship with Fergus's father was always doomed: he was rich and married, she was poor and had nothing, but Rowena was very young and in love. Fergus's father broke her heart, and she struggled with everything after that. Her child reminded her constantly of his father when she looked at him, and combined with her heartbreak, it led to Rowena closing herself off. To get past her heartbreak, she had to feel hatred, except that meant that her son didn't feel any warmth from her.

Rowena wasn't cruel. She looked after her child, kept him fed, clothed and alive, but even when he was young, all he would remember is a lack of her love despite anything else that she did give to him. Though Rowena never showed Fergus warmth, she did always love him, even if she managed to convince both of them that she hated him. Deep down, she had always loved him but had to close her heart to protect herself from feeling pain, vulnerability and any further hurt that came with love.

Her deepest regrets came when Fergus was 8. By then, she'd started practising magic and was becoming quite the talented witch, however, this was in the midst of the Scottish Witch Trials, something that Rowena had witnessed even if (yet) she hadn't been caught. However, that year was when she would be. Rather than being burned alive, she was run out of her village and fled Scotland entirely. Fergus was abandoned, left in a workhouse (where he'd likely already been working before to help bring in money). Though Rowena could have sneaked back in to get him, she never did.

At the time, she absolved herself of this due to her situation: she had nothing, and her life on the run was no place for a child, but even after Rowena had become settled, she never went back for him, even if she did keep (some) tabs on him. She was judged for having had a child and allowed the judgement of others to feed further into her actions, choosing herself and magic over him.

Though she got back into Fergus's life centuries later, she didn't know how to be a mother to him then (and a mother he didn't really want), particularly when she'd hardened herself so far that she still couldn't admit (or even think) that she loved him. It was only after her son died that Rowena felt everything that she'd locked away for centuries: grief, regret, and the love she'd never allowed herself to give. It led to Rowena recklessly trying some very desperate things to bring her son back to life, to have a second chance with him and let him know he was loved, but she would fail and be left with her grief and regret, feelings she carried through to her death.

With a clearer head, Rowena wishes she could have gone back for her son when he was still a child, to have taken him with her, even if her life was difficult. She wishes she'd been able to show him love, to be part of his life, and to know the grandson she'd never gotten to know.

What's the greatest challenge you foresee your character facing in the setting?
That she can't con some rich men into giving her money so she can live her comfy life.

Rowena is someone who has built herself up from a dirt-poor tanner's daughter (in the 1600s) to a classy, seemingly rich lady (in the 2010s), both through sense and conning people. Magic has helped Rowena build the life that she has, along with flirtatious charm, and having to start back at zero will be something of a struggle for her. The resources she's used to won't exist, she's in bigger debt than she's ever been and has to find a new plan. And a job. This woman has never had a modern job before, and she doesn't particularly want to start now.

The connections that Rowena will make will help her adjust to the scenario more easily, and she has enough knowledge and sense to pull her through (and magic). It just won't be simple. And she'll hate it, in an angry, hissing cat way.

What's the easiest thing you foresee your character adapting to in the setting?
The thing that Rowena will find easiest about being in this world is being alive again. Before coming here Rowena had died her final death, continuing her existence as a damned soul in Hell (and taking over as the Queen of Hell). Rowena will assume that being in this world was a resurrection, given how real she feels and how she can interact with the world, though there will be confusion about how it happened and who did it, she will be glad to be alive again.

Resurrection will be easy for Rowena to handle because it's not the first time that she's been resurrected. Rowena knows multiple resurrection spells, even having created a spell that turns spirit into flesh. She has also died and been resurrected before, thanks to a resurrection seal that Rowena placed within her body. Third time is the charm, right?
