IC INFORMATION

Character Name: Rowena MacLeod
Canon: Supernatural
Canon Point: Our Father, Who Aren't In Heaven ( season 15, episode 8 )
Age: 300+
Background: link

Arrival Scenario: Solvunn

Suitability:
Rowena is a character who went through such a huge arc, particularly in the last five years of her life, going from someone who was focused solely on her own survival no matter the cost to someone who sacrificed her life to save the world (and especially the lives of those she cares most about). Rowena would be more willing to get involved in the setting from this canon point, would be more willingly helpful and even guiding about magic. She's very magically (and supernaturally) knowledgeable due to her long life and skill in magic.

Whilst Rowena does have a complex relationship with god(s) due to being pagan and would be less willing to give offerings to the gods of Solvunn it would be an interesting arc to follow: when faced with trouble with her own magic would she be willing to ask something of a god, what would she do if not, how will she learn to deal with the difference in power to what she knows? (And also "secretly" jealous of the library in Thorne and wishing that they were the ones who summoned her).

Even though she may be reluctant with the gods she would be curious about the differences in magic here to what she knows and in learning the different systems of magic in this world. And whilst she finds her footing? Researching and being useful is her style.

Powers:
★ WITCH. As a witch, Rowena's immortal, immune to ageing and disease but able to be killed by other methods. Rowena has been described by others as a very powerful and dangerous witch, given the liberties she takes in using her magic and her history of using it to hurt other people for her own gains. After practising her craft for centuries, she's incredibly knowledgeable about many forms of magic, skilled in spellwork (and creating spells), using hex bags and Enochian sigils or Druidic runes. Rowena is capable of using her magic to heal herself and others, transform people and objects into other things, astral project, move people and objects telekinetically, conjure illusions, curse others (and remove curses) and has an awareness of other magical (or supernatural) beings, being able to sense them. While Rowena knows many spells, she still relies on grimoires to cast spells that she has never used before along with ingredients.

After unlocking the seal on her magic, her eyes glow purple when she uses magic and her spells take a purple hue to them. She is additionally now able to teleport, see Reapers and in general her spells have become more powerful.

Whilst Rowena is incredibly powerful there are many limitations to her. She can be wounded and killed by injury (and will remain dead if her self-resurrection spell is inactive), can be overpowered by stronger beings, is weakened by iron (limiting her power), can be exhausted by overuse of her magic, and if she cannot verbally speak she cannot cast most of her spells. Rowena is also not a fighter outside of her magic nor physically strong and is easily overpowered.

★ NERFS.
★ Rowena will only be able to teleport around Solvunn (accurately to places she's been before, inaccurately if she tries to teleport elsewhere: dropping her either in an unfortunate situation or dropping her randomly elsewhere somewhere she knows)
★ She will not be able to open any portals (such a spell requires archangel grace and she has no way of getting that from the archangels anyway)
★ Rowena currently does not have a resurrection seal on her. Whilst she would want to recreate that as her safety measure, if she did ever die I would play by the game death rules on it even with a resurrection seal.
★ She won't be able to use other resurrection spells on other characters (canonly botched resurrection spells can create zombies. If permitted as a consequence, I'd come to the plotting post to discuss it out as a plot/idea, otherwise, any resurrection spells on a person will just fail)
★ rp shenanigans/being in this world where magic works differently I'm happy to say her general power level is weaker where necessary. It would make her have to work with others for specific spells to channel enough power or to research the magic of this world. She'll be very mad about her magic being limited (again, even if she kind of understands an aspect of it) but it'll give her some motivation to try and unleash herself again (even though she can't).
★ She won't be able to summon/banish other people or teleport others with her.
★ Many of her spells require ingredients so she'd have to spend time collecting these anyway
★ Whilst Rowena does have a lot of dangerous and deadly knowledge she is now less-inclined on using it, only if she felt threatened or in danger (she learned the power of friendship). I will also have a hefty permissions post regarding Rowena's magic and won't use it against people without discussion -- whilst Rowena no longer uses her magic as cruelly as she used to, any magic use on other characters will be asked for and I won't cross ooc boundaries.
★ LINGUIST. Rowena has learned multiple languages throughout her long life. Whilst many of her spells are cast in Latin, Rowena has shown that she is knowledgable in reading and casting spells in other (and ancient) languages, being able to translate the components needed for them, and in some cases stating that she is the only witch alive capable of translating such ancient magic (and the language).

PERSONALITY QUESTIONS

Describe an important event in your character's life and how it impacted them.
One of the first things that happened in Rowena's life was monumental and set up the rest of her life. After falling pregnant (to a married man she'd had an affair with), she had her child, only to be abandoned by the father whilst she was giving birth. This moment crushed Rowena, making her feel incredibly weak and foolish (for having loved the man), making her swear at that moment to never feel weak again.

Never feeling weak also meant that she wouldn't allow herself to love either, shutting her heart away (or so she claimed). For her child it made her seem incredibly cruel, keeping them at an emotional distance, and whilst she physically cared for her child (keeping them clothed, fed and healthy) they never knew love from her, growing up believing that she hated them. In a way, on the surface, Rowena did hate her child: they reminded her of the man that had broken her, but hate was never the right word. (The love she had for her son did exist, and she did admit it, but she was afraid of it and feeling weak).

Refusing to feel weak also led Rowena down her magical path: women had no power in her time, she was incredibly poor and was living in a very bad situation, so she turned to magic, becoming a witch to try and reclaim some power for herself. Rowena couldn't rely on anyone else, needing to feel protected and safe by her own hand, needing to rely on her own strength and magic granted her this feeling. Magic also granted her the ire of the town, who ran her out of Scotland (and thus abandoning her son) but that's a different story, a long set of consequences that started with one man who crushed her heart.

Does your character have a moral code, or other set of standards they try to live by?
Rowena never looks like she has a moral code. For most of her life, she has done what has been necessary to survive and seemingly abandoned her morals to do that. Being hurt by so many over the years (the first man she loved, the Grand Coven, and many other witches) has made her need to find ways to survive, which usually involved lying or hurting others to do so, having to always look over her shoulder for someone. So Rowena uses her magic, seeming not to care when people are hurt by it, and not denying when anyone calls her evil.

Except this is untrue. Rowena isn't truly evil, certainly very grey, but she's responding to the circumstances that she's been given and when pushed into a corner she's just fighting to survive. Rowena has never acted first whenever someone has gotten hurt, she's never sought out to specifically hurt people, those that are hurt by her magic are usually due to a consequence of the spell (an unintended consequence, given that her magic had been bound by the Grand Coven giving her some less control over it). The only people that she actively chooses to hurt are those who have hurt her previously, making her treatment of them entirely based on revenge (or further self-preservation).

When Rowena finds her safety all of this stops and we start to see her true self and thus her true morals. Rowena has very high standards of herself and those around her, not suffering idiots and trying to nudge things more presentably if not favourably. She believes in magic and this is where her truth is: simplicity. Rowena wants a life where she can study and preserve magic, where she can teach others how to master their skills and how to find acceptance in a world that would try to push them down. Whilst Rowena still does have the capacity (and will) to harm if threatened, she no longer harms anyone who isn't actively trying to hurt her or someone she cares for. Rowena's biggest truth: protection. She will protect those that she cares for even if it means putting herself in danger to do so, trying to minimise any harm that she can (see: agreeing to host Michael, sacrificing her life to save the world). Where once she only made deals in offering her help she now willingly gives it.

Morally she will always be grey (if a little lighter), and her soul was bound for Hell, but she has learned a better way of life, has found satisfaction (and reason) in helping others, and actively chooses to help and support the Winchesters where once she would have killed them. She may look by on most (mundane) situations but if something magical/supernatural is amiss she will offer her support. And there are even some mundane causes that will draw in her protection and wish to help (even if she might hurt someone to do that -- if they were hurting another first).

What quality or qualities do they admire most?
For centuries, power was incredibly important to Rowena, something to be admired in others, to strive for, and something that she spent centuries seeking. Power came in many forms to her: magic (her own, angelic power, godly power) but also in the attitude of the person wielding it, the power that they exuded themselves. Power was seen as a strength for Rowena, security and safety, and especially a way of staying alive: it would make her untouchable.

Though Rowena went through a period questioning her motives, feeling lost when her search for power and strength had never helped her and had led her to this, it's always been something she's continued to follow: she unshackled her own magic, she continued researching magic (particularly old and dangerous magic, or creating new spells) and after dying took the throne of Hell for herself, becoming Queen. Whilst Rowena know knows that power isn't everything it's still important to her: she'll always need to protect herself and it's useful having any kind of spell in your back pocket.

Rowena also admires a hard work ethic, appreciating the effort that people put into something. As someone who has spent centuries building up her knowledge, financial security and what she needs to survive in the modern century (even if much of it was grifted), Rowena appreciates when others work hard for something rather than simply being given it. It's one reason why she comes to appreciate the Winchesters after their initial disagreement: they don't shy away from something difficult, they put the work in to find the solution (especially Sam who is always researching lore, and sometimes magic). Rowena's much more likely to appreciate something that has had time put into it rather than something hastily done, whether that is a job, art, or something someone has built.

Do they have a part of themselves they dislike?
Yes, but she'll never admit it.

Weakness is the thing that Rowena dislikes the most, the fact that she can feel weak over strong, the fact that she has been completely broken before in her life, and the fact that it isn't something that she can ever truly overcome.

At first, love was the thing that Rowena believed made her weak, trying to shut off her heart and appearing cold and calculating, an "evil skank", a "heartless bitch", all names that Rowena took and owned, refusing to let simple words hurt her (they didn't) and trying to claim them for her own power. Except no matter what Rowena believed she did love, she did have a heart and in the end it didn't really make her weak, even though having others see that (and the pain that her love brought her) made her feel weak.

Fear also makes Rowena feel weak, particularly her fear of Lucifer. Rowena will never admit to being afraid of anything except for Lucifer, the man who has killed her twice, tortured her a little and given her nightmares that she can never shake. Feeling weak here, so utterly afraid that she'd felt powerless, had been the worst feeling that Rowena had known (in centuries), making her strive to finally break the seal on her magic so that she could be strong enough to overcome Lucifer if she ever saw him again, so that she wouldn't feel powerless and afraid around him again.

But, as Sam put it, nothing would stop her from feeling afraid, no matter how powerful she became. He was right because even after unleashing her full power she still felt afraid at even the mere mention of Lucifer's name, she just managed to hold herself together around him (with the help from some handy knowledge from Death).

Even though Rowena is much more put together than she used to be it doesn't stop her from hating anything that makes her feel weak, and kicking herself (and being a little frustrated) that something has caused her to feel powerless, especially if others witness it.

What is their sign, and why?
Rowena is the high priestess due to being a knowledge seeker. She spent over three hundred years studying and learning many forms of magic, seeking out old spells, creating new spells, and even up until the moment of her death Rowena still finds new things about magic, studying texts that she's owned for years to reveal anything she may have missed. There is always an answer in magic, something that Rowena strongly believes in, and whilst she is incredibly knowledgable (and skilled) she will never believe that she's learned everything, knowing that something new may be the key to her own survival if pushed (or useful to know). There are many forms of magic that don't interest Rowena but knowing something about them is more important even if she wouldn't practice it: knowledge can be traded, it can be useful, and she'll never know what she might need in the future. Knowledge is the real power. And it doesn't hurt to have someone owe you a favour for what you know, to be needed for your knowledge.
